Joy Lapps is the founder and program director of the Steel Pan Experience. Joy began playing the steel pan in 1997 at Malvern’s Church of the Nativity under the direction of Vince Cato. As she realized her love for the instrument, her solo career soon came alive, earning her the title "Princess of Pan".
Since this time, Joy has graced the stage of some of the most acclaimed showcases for the instrument including "Autumn Leaves on Steel" at CBC's Glen Gould Studio, the "Moods of Pan Festival" 2004 held in Antigua, and the 2007 "Snowflakes on Steel". She has also released three successful albums.
Sharing her love for the instrument, Joy teaches steel pan lessons to children and adults. She continues to facilitate numerous steel pan workshops and presentations within the Toronto, Public and Catholic School Boards in addition to the Durham and Peel District School Boards.
Beyond her musical expertise, Joy has years of experience working with children and youth. She has worked in various leadership roles with the Town of Ajax Recreation Department in addition to volunteering and working with the Samba Kidz music and arts program.
Joy possesses a tremendous love for music, passion for people and commitment to promoting the arts especially the steel pan. And so for the Princess of Pan presenting you with the Steel Pan Experience is a dream come true.
